Terrific Tuesday! Have a great holiday break!

    Today the students watched Polar Express... One of my favorite movies!


 
 
Also, students worked hard on their Christmas Cards....
 
 
Please remember to have your child practice math fluency... If they return both addition/subtraction packets... they will receive a prize from the prize box!!  Also, a reminder to have your child continue to read on Raz Kids and practice math on DreamBox :)

Marvelous Monday! Polygon review, Mad Minute, Non Fiction Writing...

Hi All,

    Today in Math, we reviewed Polygons! 
 
Tonight, the students homework is to find polygons in newspapers/magazines and glue them onto a piece of paper! Have fun!!!
 
Also, we took our December Mad Minute test!! Students are really showing great progress in math fluency!
 
In writing, we continued writing dash facts about our non fiction animals and started writing complete sentences!
 
A reminder that tomorrow is an early release day!!! 1:20pm Dismissal!

Terrific Thursday! Parallel Line segments, Headings into questions... NF Writing...

    In math today, the objective was to introduce the concept of parallel and parallel line segments. 
 
 
Parallel lines NEVER touch!!! 
 
In reading, the students practiced turning headings into questions... And we talked about the importance of headings in a NON FICTION text...

Wonderful Wednesday! Math Review 5.2, Predictions, NON Ficiton...

Hi All,

   Today we had a quick review of lesson 5.2... Some of the students had trouble with the homework... So, today, we did another review of lesson 5.2... Our lesson focused on Points and line segments... Students practiced defining, naming, and drawing line segments.
In reading, the students objective predict the topic or headings based on the information created in the text... The students practiced making predictions using the headings... take a look!!!
 
 
 
In writing, the students starting drafting for their non fiction reports!! It is getting very exciting in Room 114!!! Our writing is going to get more specific and informative!!
 
 
A reminder that tomorrow and Friday are early dismissals!!

Marvelous Monday! Math Unit 5 Attribute Rules, Context Clues, & High Touch, High Tech!!

Hi All,

    Today we started Unit 5 in Math.... We explored rules, sharing, and time.... Students had to put shapes on one side that fit the rule... and on another side that did not fit the rule...

    In reading today, our objective was "Good Readers use context clues to solve unknown words." 
 
This afternoon, we had HIGH TOUCH, HIGH TECH come to our classroom (in school field trip)...
 
The students had a chance to do experiments in the classroom... Take a look!!!

Terrific Thursday! Math Test, Winter Concert, & Paw Pajama Party!

Hi All,

    The students took their Unit 4 test today!

The students saw the Winter Concert today! Take a look! (THE BIG CHILL)

 
This afternoon, the students watched "Despicable Me 2" during their pajama paw party!!!  They were so excited! Thank you Mrs. Vetti for the yummy goodies!!!!

Wonderful Wednesday... Math Review... Table of Contents for asking questions...

Hi all,

    Just a few things... This morning was reviewed for our open response unit 4 test... The students have one page for homework... Please take a look at the students practicing with their partners...

Students had to talk about their thinking... After they placed the numbers in the correct spots... An example of explaining their thinking with the unit 4 response is... "First, I put the biggest numbers in the tens place.  Next, I put the smallest numbers in the ones place.  Then, I added up all the numbers and got _______."
 
   In reading, the students objective was "good readers use the table of contents to ask questions they think will be answered in the text."  Students practiced asking "Who" "What" "Where" "When" "Why" questions with the table of contents....
 
   A reminder that tomorrow we have our pajama paw party and watching Despicable Me 2!!! Kudos to your child's hard work!! 
 
Students have one page of math and one page of reading tonight...
Also tomorrow the students have their UNIT 4 Math Test!!

Rainy Tuesday... Math Review... TOC.. and Non Fiction Facts...

Hi All,

  In math today, we reviewed for our Unit 4 test.... Your child has review page for tonight's homework...

   In reading today, our objective was using the table of contents to make predictions.... Students practiced using the table of contents and turning the topics into questions....

  

    In writing today... our objective was "good writers sort information gathered by a subtopic."  Students continued to record and research dash facts and use an organizer to help them. 

    A great website the students can read about their non fiction topic is http://animals.sandiegozoo.org/  Please visit the San Diego Zoo website! It is kid friendly and I showed the students this website today!!

A quick reminder that tomorrow is an EARLY dismissal day!!!

Marvelous Monday... Index... Subtopics for writing...

Hi All,

   Just a quick note... please make sure your child is practicing their math fluency! (Mad minute facts)

In reading today, we talked about the importance of an index in a non fiction text.  We located that the index is at the end of the book and that it states a topic and page(s) where the topic can be found. 
The students also practiced turning topics of the index into questions...
 
In writing, students started writing down facts about where their animals lived on their non fiction planner.  Take a look!

Fun Friday! Diagrams, Dash Facts, and More!

Hi all,

    Just a few things....

In reading today, the students objective was "good readers can gain information by using the diagrams in their non fiction texts"  Students worked with partners and talked about how diagrams help them understand the text.

Malaki and Camilo shared their responses on how diagrams helped them!

In writing today, the students practiced writing dash facts (quick facts) down about their topics... Some students used the ipads and computers... others used their multiple books to help them jot down quick facts!

(Those are examples of dash facts for the topic of fish)
Kathryn and Jonathan are collecting their facts on the computer...

Celeste is using the ipad to collect dash facts...

Ryan is using the ipad and Christopher is using his book to collect facts...

Turbo Thursday! Ballpark Estimates, Printed Words in Text...

Hi All,

   In math today, we continued to review BALLPARK ESTIMATES.  I have sent home a ballpark estimate help page with rounding.  Tonight the students are assigned one page of math homework.

  In reading today, we discussed the importance of bold print in text.  When a word is in BOLD, that means it is .... IMPORTANT!

 
Please make sure your child is wearing a winter coat or else I may not take them outside for recess...

Hi All,


   In Math today, our objective was to introduce and practice the partial-sums addition algorithm. 
 
In reading today, the students took a look at non fiction features in their books....
 
Miguel found the index...
Jonathan found the index...
Jessica found a diagram...
Yomara found the table of contents...
Maira found a photograph...
 

In writing today, we practiced searching for quick facts about our non fiction topics...
 
Tonight the students have one page of math and one page of reading homework!
